Our Story
vivid-rain began in 2019 as a simple idea: cooking education should focus on understanding, not memorisation. Too many classes left participants with beautiful dishes but no idea how to recreate them at home.
Founded by a group of former restaurant professionals who had grown weary of the industry's demanding hours, we set out to share what we'd learned in a way that actually stuck. No racing through recipes. No intimidating jargon. Just clear explanations of the techniques that separate confident cooks from those forever tethered to measurements and timers.
What started as weekend workshops in a borrowed commercial kitchen has grown into a full programme of classes serving hundreds of home cooks across Australia each year. The kitchen is bigger now, but the philosophy remains unchanged.
What Guides Us
Technique Over Recipe
Understanding why something works matters more than following steps. We teach principles that transfer across cuisines and ingredients.
Approachable Excellence
Professional-quality results shouldn't require professional equipment or ingredients. We work within the constraints of a home kitchen.
Seasonal Connection
Great cooking starts with great ingredients. We build our curriculum around what's at peak quality in Australian markets.
Learning Through Doing
You can't learn to cook by watching. Our classes are hands-on from start to finish, with ample time for practice and questions.
Our Approach
Every vivid-rain programme follows a consistent structure designed to maximise retention. We begin each session with a brief explanation of the day's core technique—the science behind it, common mistakes, and visual cues that indicate success. Then we demonstrate, stepping through each stage slowly while explaining our decision-making process.
The majority of class time belongs to you. You'll practice the technique repeatedly, receiving individual feedback from our instructors. We've found that muscle memory develops best when you can ask questions in real-time and adjust based on immediate guidance.
Each session concludes with a take-home summary—not a recipe, but a framework. We want you to walk away understanding how to apply what you've learned to whatever ingredients you have on hand, not just the specific dish we cooked together.
The Teaching Kitchen
Our purpose-built facility in Sydney's inner west features individual workstations for each participant, ensuring everyone has ample space and direct access to equipment. We've deliberately chosen appliances and cookware that mirror what you'd find in a well-equipped home kitchen—no industrial ranges or specialised gadgets that create false expectations.
Small class sizes cap at ten participants for group programmes, though most sessions run with six to eight. This ratio allows our instructors to provide meaningful individual attention while maintaining the collaborative energy that makes cooking together enjoyable.
